Ross on Wye G.C. has a thriving Ladies’ section with approx 120 ladies, including a number of social members who still meet regularly on a Tuesday for lunch.
Lady Captain
The Committee headed by the Ladies’ Captain is responsible for the organisation of the Ladies' Section. This year our Lady Captain is Amanda Marshall.
Amanda Marshall took over as Lady Captain on Monday, 7th November and will hold the office for one year. Amanda is married to John, who is a director of the investment management company McInroy & Wood, and has two daughters, Rowena and Frances. A graduate of Edinburgh University, Amanda says the only use she puts her degree in English to these days is to answer literary questions in quizzes and general knowledge crosswords. She lived in Asia for twelve years, initially South Korea where Ro was born, then Japan where Fran was born and finally Indonesia where her love of golf was born. She was first introduced to golf as a teenager but did not pursue it preferring tennis instead. However, when her tennis doubles partner left Jakarta, Amanda decided that it was time to try golf again, as there is nothing sadder than half of a doubles partnership! A passion was born and the tennis racquet has stayed firmly in its cover for the last fifteen years. Her goal is to get down to single figures and to have a lot of fun on the way.
Amanda’s charity is ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind’ and she is hoping during the year to raise enough money so the Ladies Section will be able to name a puppy with a suitable golfing name. Fund raising events will include a ‘Longest Day Challenge’ when a group of ladies plan to golf from dawn to dusk and set the record of the most holes at Ross played in one day, and a cycling event, organised by John, which will involve cycling to all the golf courses in Herefordshire in one day.
The Lady Captain works very hard attending the large number of Social, Mixed and Junior events that the club runs each year, as well as the various committee meetings pertaining to each aspect of the club.
Each year the Lady Captain organises a well- supported golf day both at Ross and an Away Day at another course. The emphasis on these days is fun!
Tuesday is the Ladies main competition day. Predominantly qualifying competitions take place from March until October. These include EWGA and club medals in two divisions with a best gross, as well as competitions for various cups and trophies mainly handicapped, but some scratch cups too.
There are many social events organised by the Ladies throughout the year including coffee mornings, bridge drives, occasional fashion shows, raffles and much more. These events provide funds for the Ladies Section and raise money for the Lady Captain's Charity.
The Ladies organise social golf events against the other sections of the club and some ladies are active in helping to organise the Junior Section.
We have a number of talented ladies who contribute on a daily basis to the decoration of the clubhouse with impressive displays of flowers. In addition these and other lady members help with the Christmas decorations setting the scene for the festive Christmas Lunch, which is one of the many well-supported social gatherings around the dining table. Other popular functions are the A,B and C team dinners and also the Annual Ladies Dinner.
After an incredibly busy year the Lady Captain, Amanda, will hand over to her Vice Captain, Jeanette Forester at the Ladies AGM in November 2012. The new Lady Captain's first golfing duty will be to "drive in". This is done at the first ladies competition, which is usually held the following day. The Past Captain will then join the noteworthy section of Past Ladies Captains, with all that that entails.
