Start of 2008 Season
Ex-Ryder Cup Captain Brian Huggett Tees Off The Golfing Season for Ross on Wye Junior Section With an Exciting Question and Answer Session.
Ross on Wye Junior Section Celebrated the start of the new season with an Easter Extravaganza for themselves and guests. The promised storms did not appear and twelve pairs set off in sunny weather to play 9 holes of better ball stableford. A sudden short hailstorm did not prevent the teams from finding the Easter eggs hidden on the course for them and with the best score of each pair counting on every hole there were some very big scores brought in.
At the end of the competition the juniors and guests were joined by their parents and other guests including the club Captain Frank Gallagher, Lady Vice Captain Mrs Wynn Pearson and special guest Mr Brian Huggett the famous Welsh golf professional, winner of many British and European titles on both the Ordinary Tour and again later on the Senior Tour and who was the Ryder Cup Captain in 1963 and again from 1967 to 1975.
Everyone enjoyed a splendid buffet meal in the club house and after enjoying this well deserved feast the club Professional, Paul Middleton, took a few minutes to explain to the juniors his coaching plans for the new season.
The Junior Organiser then thanked Nick Ellis the retiring Junior Captain for the most excellent job that he did as Captain through 2007 and introduced the new Captain for 2008, Ross Jenkins and his Vice Captain Arthur Cartwright.
Nick then announced the winners of the competition who received their Easter eggs and pro-shop vouchers from Brian Huggett.
First prize went to guest team David Barnard and Jake Sarjeant with 27pts, second to Will Turpin and Jacob Ashdown with 26 pts and third to Harry Butler and Nick Ellis with 25 pts.
Then Brian spoke to the juniors about his experiences in the golfing world
and answered their many questions about his first Ryder Cup match when he
beat the great Arnold Palmer and other matches in which he defeated Jack Nicklaus
one of golf's greatest players though he had to admit That Tiger Woods was now the world's number one.
Brian kept his audience amused with exciting descriptions of his past competitions and with some very useful advice on keeping focused on one's game and the best way to warm up for a competition. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his interesting and witty answers and the youngsters were very encouraged by his enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment of his long career in golf.
