Exceptional Year for Men's 'A' Team'

'Exceptional Year for Men's 'A' Team'

All sections within the Gorsley-based Ross Golf Club can currently point to examples of the much improved performance standards experienced by their respective members thanks to the 'continuous improvement' culture and 'School of Golf' coaching structures introduced in 2012 when Head Professional Tim Hall and his team were appointed. Exciting evidence of this has emerged during the past few weeks when Neil Lancett as Manager and non-playing Captain of the Ross Club's Men's A team , which is coached by Tim Hall, was able to collect two major trophies on his team's behalf for their remarkable successes in this seasons North Gloucestershire Foursomes League.

The League has been in existence since 1955 and is represented by 16 Golf Club's from the Gloucestershire County plus the Herefordshire based Ross Club and split into 3 Divisions with Ross competing at the top level in 2018 after winning the Division 2 title last year. In a nail-biting finish Neil's team became Division 1 Champions recently for the first time in their history after winning 6 of their 10 matches played throughout the Summer. Cirencester Golf Club were the runners-up after both teams scored 12 points each and the 'holes differential' decided the outcome in the Ross Club's favour. Neil was quick to praise all 18 players for their commitment and support by taking part in this scratch foursomes match play format and he felt fortunate that he had been able to include in every match a competitive mix of youth and experience. As regards the former, there were 3 teenagers in Ross Juniors Captain, Liam Greig, 16 years old Harry Griffiths and 2017 Men's Club Champion Cam Haines who have contributed an impressive hat-full of match points. On the latter front, seasoned campaigners Steve Wallbank and 2016 Club Captain Warren Moore will highlight their playing record as a pair for since they came together in 2016 they have competed in 21 matches , winning 17 and losing only 3. Other stand out points scorers throughout 2018 have been Jason Bolton, David Daniels, Robin Eckley, Tim Wyatt and Alistair Watkins.

2 weeks after this success Neil's team was in action again in the North Glos Foursomes League Cup being an end of season event where each Club are invited to take part with 4 foursomes partnerships and the best 3 medal scores counting. Neil's team were defending Champions after defeating the host Club Minchinhampton 12 months ago by the narrowest of margins and history was to repeat itself this time at Stinchcombe Hills Golf Club.

A brilliant 1 under par gross 67 from Tim Wyatt and Robin Eckley, together with gross scores of 71 from Cam Haines and Harry Griffiths, and a 76 from Steve Wallbank and Liam Greig meant that Ross actually tied with host club Stinchcombe Hill on a total of 10 over par 214. This meant the 4th score becoming the tie-breaker and with Stinchcombe in the clubhouse with a gross 79 it was left to Steve Price and Simon Mills to card a 78 and win the Cup in identical fashion for the second consecutive year.
