'Barnfield Trophy Attracts Everyone'
Ross Golf Club's series of monthly winter stableford competitions, from which ultimately emerges the winner of the Club's annual honours board major Barnfield Trophy has taken on board a new dynamic for the 2018/19 season. Now available to all sections of the club the events welcomes ladies members taking part and the opening round, spread over two days to accommodate the numbers involved witnessed 11 ladies members competing in the 109 players field. The top 12 performers qualify from each of the 5 rounds so that a 60 player start-sheet will contest for the Barnfield Trophy title in March 2019. The rounds have 3 handicap divisions from which the top 4 players in each are the successful ones.
The November stableford competition kick-started proceedings and the day's stand-out winner was Robin Butler. His impressive 44 points haul which included 2 birdies was a model in consistency resulting in Robin playing 8 shots better than his 18 handicap which now moves to 17. Fellow qualifiers in handicap Division 3 were all men seniors members in Steve Bartholomew and John Sherahilo with 40 points each and Hugh Elliott with 38 points. In Division 2 Steven Gwilliam's equally impressive 42 points was the top score followed by David Morris and Martin Johnson with 41 points and Wref Digings 40 points. Division 1's star players were Colin Bennion 37 points, Simon Mills 36 and Tim Wyatt and Stuart Smith with 35 points. Certainly Tim Wyatt will be able to reflect upon his 2018 golfing year with considerable satisfaction where he was the 'last man standing' to win the Club's Annual Collins Flag medal. Tim also made important contributions, as did Simon Mills in the Ross Club's remarkable team successes at the highest level when their Men's 'A' Team captured two major trophies in this season's North Gloucestershire Foursomes League.
