2018 Juniors Awards Evening Celebrated

Members of all sections of the Gorsley based Ross Golf Club were delighted that their Head Professional Tim Hall and his 'School of Golf Team' were able to achieve their own 'personal goal' when the Club's first-ever Junior Awards evening took place recently. The support of 120 members, family and friends contributed considerably to the dynamic of the evening's occasion which everyone involved felt justifiably proud to be associated with.

Certainly the occasion will live long in the memory of Cameron Hughes who received the John Gabb Trophy as being the most improved Junior in 2018 and as having given most to the Junior section. For Cameron his handicap has plummeted from 34 to 21 in a year when he won the Welsh Mini Masters and a British Junior Golf Tour event and qualified to return to the home at golf at St Andrews for the second successive year to represent the Ross Club to play 2 rounds in the Wee Wonders British Championships.

In other notable awards the Players' 'Player of 2018' was won jointly by Fred Unthank & Matty Dobbs in a season where Matty highlighted in winning the Club's Annual Captain's Prize event. Rhian McGinley who finished 4th in the same event witnessed her many accomplishments being deservedly celebrated in a year which has seen her handicap tumble from 33 to 24 in winning both George & Margaret Lane and Bob Beavis Cups and the 6 holes Ladies Summer knock-out Final. Liam Greig has been a model Ross Juniors Captain since his appointment in March and he received the Brian Huggett award to go with his David Sainsbury Cup won earlier in the year.

For the Academy as a whole it has been remarkable that 136 Juniors have been enrolled during the past 9 months and the 'collective spirit' based upon intrinsic behaviours will have played a key part in the Ross Junior Team winning the Gloucestershire Team Championships and then qualifying for the English Golf Union's National Team Championships at the prestigious Frilford Heath Golf Club. The Development Juniors squad were not to be outdone and in great style were declared Champions in the Gloucestershire County inaugural 'Golf Sixes' League. The Ross Club has also felt privileged that many of the Juniors have represented the County through their enrolment with the Hartpury College Coaching & Training facilities.

For Tim Hall personally, the Juniors Award evening has been 6 years in the making since he was appointed as the Club's Head Professional in 2012. Since then multiple awards have followed with his School of Golf Academy, which he brought to the Wye Valley from the Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club at the heart of matters. The latest acknowledgement as a result of a talk given by Club Captain Robert Tuttiett has arrived from the Golf Society of Great Britain and a £500 donation to the Academy in recognition of their Junior Development programme which seeks to develop a youngster's personality as well as their golfing talent.
